So, you've decided to take the plunge and get your very first tattoo. The question that might come to mind initially is, where do you begin? There is a lot of forethought involved in getting yourself tattooed. It can be intimidating, especially for the very first time. Before you take action, consider the following list of "dos and don'ts" for this bold and daring new experience:

1. DO Choose the Right Tattoo Artist and Tattoo Parlor

Visit a local tattoo parlor and speak one-on-one with the artists. You will probably know to ask about prior experience, but you might want to ask about their specialties as well. Most tattoo artists specialize in one or more areas. Some create traditional images, while others create realistic photo images from a picture. Some specialize in fantasy graphics. Check out the styles of several artists to determine which suits your own personal style.

2. DON'T Go Into the Tattoo Parlor Unprepared

Yes, there is some prep work involved on your part before you obtain your tattoo. You'll want to eat a light meal beforehand, because you may be there a while. Refrain from drinking any alcoholic beverages and tell the tattoo artist if you are currently taking any prescription medications. Of course you'll want to shower or bathe beforehand. Also, be sure you are feeling healthy and well on the day you are to be inked.

3. DO Bring Along a Sample Photo or Image Of What You'd Like Inked

It is much easier for the artist to create a realistic and accurate depiction if he or she sees what you're wanting in detail. Find a photo or image to bring in with you. Be sure the photo of reference is sharp and clear. If you would like to make a few changes or alterations and deviate a bit from the image, explain in detail what changes you'd prefer.

Equally important as the photo or image itself, you'll need to determine the placement of the tattoo. If you're feeling uneasy or uncertain, choose a spot that is non-conspicuous, such as the shoulder or upper arm.

4. DON'T Be Timid About Expressing Discomfort

Getting inked will most likely come with a degree of discomfort. If you are feeling pain and would lime a short break, do tell your tattoo artist. Don't be afraid to speak up if you feel any pain. Ask for a drink of water or a few moments to pause.

5. DO Ask About Post-Care For Your Tattoo

Once you get your first tattoo, be aware there are maintenance steps involved to keep the ink looking well preserved and beautiful. Be aware of the healing process that may take a while. You may notice a scab (or several, depending upon the size of the tattoo) that should heal in time. Your artist will explain how to care for the area. You will also be told to avoid direct sunlight for a few weeks following your tattoo. After the initial healing period, use a quality sunscreen for protection when outdoors.
